The game has fantastic graphics and after a few adjustments to the sensitivity settings, the game begins to react somewhat like a real driving experience.
However, I would agree with another reviewer when they said the game isn't exactly true to life. I grew up racing cars, drag strips, sprints, dirt ovals and dirt bikes The truth is, in real life there would be no way any driver could maintain control over the vehicle at the simulated speed in the game.
To compare the visual blur effects to real life, one would have to be traveling at the speed of sound. It's one thing to move ones thumbs back and forth through tight curves and an entirely different thing when trying the same, but using the wheel of a real car.
For starters, it would be literally impossible for anyone to move that fast and secondly, as much as we wish we could, no one can process that much information at one time or within the time it would take to react to a given situation. I also noticed in the game a few videos from pro racers trying to convince everyone it's like driving in the pros or real life and I can assure you, its NOT!
Granted, I have never raced on the levels these guys have but none the less, automobile characteristics are pretty much all the same and quite frankly, in terms of sheer mechanics, this game defies physics. Another thing that could be improved upon is the menu section, while it's cool to look at, it offers nothing special. Since EA is after simulating real life, it might not be a bad idea to offer a better selection of aftermarket parts, truly customizable paint, etc.
This is something I have never understood about game programmers, especially EA Sports, they come up with a great idea for a game, then the idea dies with the game when it's replacement comes out. For example, Porsche Unleashed was a game EA put out years ago and was one of the first to offer online racing. The online section had a lobby with a chat room setting where those not racing could chat.
One could also choose to see all the races going on and could even view any race they wanting to view, as a spectator.
All that was left out of later releases. EA Sports Carbon was another game where EA added some cool ideas that have not shown up in later games. For example, one could free roam throughout multiple cities and it was more realistic in the fact one had to literally drive to a shop to work on their cars, buy parts or customize the paint, etc. All of which made for a more realistic experience. All in all, it's a great game and definitely worth the download price. Just don't expect the game to replace the real excitement found behind the wheel of a real automobile, as it's what it is, a video game.
NOTE: I wouldn't suggest using a wheel to play this game or you'll be hating it within the first hour. I would suggest using a Xbox or similar type controller for the best experience. The variable speed throttle and brake alone makes it worth it, however, the controller offers much, much more. I can drive the car on the track now. There still is no FFB to center the wheel but the car is not difficult to drive. As proof, I have now moved up to removing the driving assists, changed the damage model to full, and shifted to PRO difficulty.
I have driven several hours now and it is like a whole different game. I just wish the game was like this when I purchased it. Night driving is sufficiently different to definitely be worth it. I don't like the helmet cam. I still like Shift 1 but I am liking Shift 2 alot now. So reading around it looks like the default wheel profiles were not optimized or played through in any meaningful way before software was launched.
On my Thrustmaster , the game was not playable as received. The car would jump from one side to the other of the track. The wheel had to be constantly sawed to try to stay on the road. Lots of frustration later, I began to notice that the wheel response was non-linear. So some of this was eliminated by turning off 'speed sensitivity' which is a non-linear response of the steering as the speed increases.
There is no tracking feedback in the wheel. Actually, there is no FFB at all unless you run off the track then there is bumps. So, Some of my problem is not getting any feedback when the wheel approaches the center. The result is that the car continually drifts from side to side and as I do not hit a perfect 0 center in the middle of racing. It is not great but it gets the cars drivable. The more nimble the car the less this helps. The menus are awful and inconsistent for keys used.
Strange key selections like hitting the shift key when you want to select something. Another issue is that this game does not appear to support multiple driver profiles. In Shift 1, me and the kids would all have different race careers, badges, cars, etc. In Shift 2, this does not appear to be supported. To start a game over, you have to go delete a file in the folder structure.
